Let's Study Hebrews
In all Bible study, individual or corporate, we have several aims:
1. To gain an understanding of the original meaning of the particular passage of Scripture;
2. To apply this to ourselves and our own situation;
3. To develop some specific ways of putting the biblical teaching into practice.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 provides a helpful structure. Paul says that Scripture is useful for:
i. teaching us;
ii. rebuking us;
iii. correcting, or changing us;
iv. training us in righteousness.
Consequently, in studying any passage of Scripture, we should always have in mind these questions:
• What does this passage teach us (about God, ourselves, etc.)?
• Does it rebuke us in some way?
• How can its teaching transform us?
• What equipment does it give us for serving Christ?
In fact, these four questions alone would provide a safe guide in any Bible study.
